Public Allies Miami is the local chapter of a a national AmeriCorps program funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency created to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and their nation. The project is also funded in part by Allegany Franciscan Ministries and The Children's Trust.
Public Allies currently has 13 similar programs across the U.S., and its partnership with the Human Services Coalition (HSC) is the organization's first in Florida. HSC launched the Public Allies program in October 2007, placing 15 local men and women between the ages of 18 and 30 to work with nonprofits as apprentices for 10 months. In the 2009-10 year, Public Allies Miami doubled that number to 30 Allies.

Why become an Ally?
It's the real thing. Diversity is not just an ideal to us. Social change is not just a social concept. You are not just another idealistic young person. Community is not just where you work, it's where you live.
In short, we walk the talk. On average, Allies are 67% people of color, 60% women, 50% college graduates (including some with graduate degrees), and 15% LGBT. Most Allies live in the community they serve. And we value commitment and leadership potential more than educational background or relevant work history. The diversity of our Ally network is our greatest strength, so all are welcome.
It's rewarding
You can change your life while changing your community... and earning a paycheck. As an Ally, you'll be a member of AmeriCorps and receive a stipend and benefits for your service. Allies earn a stipend of $1,250 to $1,800 per month, and they receive healthcare, child care, interest-free student loan deferments, and a $4,725 education award to pay back student loans or pay for future education.
And you never stop being an Ally... after your 10-month service, we'll help you identify and pursue your career and educational goals. Our alumni programs can help secure additional education support and connect with employers. We even sponsor trips to Washington, D.C. to learn about advocacy on Capitol Hill, provide grants for innovative projects, and offer other forms of support.
It achieves results
More than 2,200 alumni are making a career out of making a difference. More than 95% of Allies would participate again if they could, and over 80% of alumni continue to work in the nonprofit and public sectors. More than 95% of Allies have met or exceeded their service goals helping tens of thousands of children, adults and families achieve greater education, health, economic security, and participation in the civic life of their communities.
Each Ally will receive full health benefits, a monthly stipend of $1500 and $4,700 at the end of the program to help fund their education. Allies receive intensive ongoing professional development training to prepare them for their roles and host organization representatives are invited and encouraged to participate in this training.
"Our goal is to provide professional development opportunities for diverse youth in Miami-Dade County while strengthening our community and our nonprofits through community engagement," said Parmer Heacox, director of Civic Life for HSC.
