What is PLTI-Miami?

PLTI is an initiative created to improve the lifelong health, safety and learning of Miami-Dade County's children by helping you learn the leadership skills to make real change -- in schools, communities and state and local governments. Through PLTI's unique adult learning experience, you explore your passions, strengths, beliefs and ideas. Then, you work to develop interpersonal and public communications skills, as well as your understanding of government, media and civic relations.

Why PLTI-Miami?

PLTI helps you become and remain informed, engaged and involved in your neighborhood, your school and your community, so all children can benefit from your ideas and passion.

Children are not the only ones who benefit. PLTI graduates report that they learn about the world and themselves, and that the program was a life-changing experience.

Since its inception, PLTI has helped more than 1600 parents around the country make a difference as they take leadership roles in local Parent Teacher Organizations, parent involvement committees, boards of education, advisory boards and nonprofit boards.

How does it work?

You meet for one night each week for 20 weeks. Meals and child care are provided. Training is free. Through PLTI, you will:

  • Gain a better understanding of what talents and skills you possess and how to build your leadership;
  • Become more comfortable with diversity among people and opinions;
  • Practice communication skills, public speaking and media advocacy skills;
  • Learn research, needs-assessment, problem-solving and planning techniques;
  • Understand program budgets, policy and laws that affect children;
  • Learn how to work in the political system to make your voice heard;
  • Complete a community project related to something you're passionate about;
  • Participate in a graduation ceremony.

It's amazing what you can do ...

  • Develop or participate in projects that make life better for children and families in your community;
  • Change laws and policies for the benefit of children and families;
  • Learn skills that will help you get more involved in your community;
  • Engage in child advocacy efforts in your school district or your child's school;
  • Uncover new opportunities for community involvement;
  • Develop greater self confidence;
  • Feel more connected with other families in your community; and
  • See a real difference in the health, happiness and success of children in your community.
